I usually have a very tough time reading through the default interface for the R-help archives and mailing lists because of its scattered and non-compact views. When I read a question, I hate having to click back and forth to find answers to that particular question. When a question has several answers and a long threaded conversation, the annoyance turns into a headache.
Why can't all answers be displayed on the same page as the question?! Is it so tough to understand that people don't just come there to read the questions? At the very least, why can't all answers be linked out from the main question?! Instead, the mailing list forces you to go forward and backward in a linear fashion to find all the answers till the next question starts. Apparently, the idea of poorly designed and ill-thought-out generic mailing lists is to make life tougher for people. However, some external interfaces for the R-help mailing list makes it easier to view the threads and answers.
Ranked by ease of use.
MarkMail R-project mailing list archives interface
{Very nice multi-window email software-like view. I prefer this site over all the others.}
Google Groups R-Help Archive/Mailing list Interface
{Collapsible thread-like presentation. Q&A on the same page.}
Nabble complete R-Help Archive and other R Mailing lists Interface
{Simple, nice presentation of multi-post threads. Q&A on the same page.}
The Mail Archive R-Help Archive/Mailing List Interface
{Threads are not expanded. Q&A are not displayed in full on the same page. You have to click on a link to go to the expanded answer/question. Better than the default. But not so great.}
Gmane R-Help Archive/Mailing List Interface
{Tiny text. Very annoying. Awful green accents. Ugh.}
The Default R-Help mailing archives.
{Wait, what's the difference between this and the default? Nothing.}
The default R-Help mailing archives.
{Ouch.}
