Search more efficiently on CiteULike

I am not exaggerating when I say that the Apache Lucene search engine on CiteULike is appallingly bad. It is inconsistent, never finds articles I want to find, gives results only when it wants to, skips results randomly, and is MOST aggravating when you are on a deadline and trying to find things to get your writing done.

In short, I hate it.

Thankfully, the alternative works very well (on Chrome).

  1. Go to chrome://settings/searchEngines
  2. Under "Other Search Engines". Add a new CUL search engine.
  3. Pick a short keyword for initiating the search (I picked cul).
  4. Enter this long long string in the box that says: URL with %s in place of query:

    https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=%s&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.citeulike.org%2Fuser%2FZephyrus&as_occt=any&safe=active&tbs=&as_filetype=&as_rights=

  5. Of course, unless you want to search my boring library (you are most welcome, btw), replace "Zephyrus" with your username on citeulike.
  6. You are done.
Next time you want to search some keyword in your CUL library all you need to do is:
  • Press Ctrl + L --> Will take you to the omnisearch bar on Chrome
  • Type cul and tab --> Tell Google to search with that long string you entered for CUL
  • Type your keyword/s.

And experience aggravation-free results!
